My first for 2020. Wilbur Smith seems to have the knack of writing adventure stories that capture the time and place. Set in the late 1600's we have basically the handing over the hero status reigns from Hal to Tom (second eldest son and twin to Guy). Hal is commissioned to rout out some corsairs who are disrupting the profitable trade links by plundering East Indian company ships. Forwarned of the pirates ruses, Hal sets up his ship as bait. The pirates accept such, however during ensuingI did not enjoy this book. It is a lengthy good that spans a huge stretch of the world but the characters are narrow and flat. This is the first book in this series that I have read. I think it stands on its own just fine. The author goes to some lengths to highlight the connections between previous novels. I will say that it is pretty obvious where future books will build from. The novel primarily focuses on the eastern shores of Africa in the 17th century. The main characters are Englishmen
Wilbur Smith wrote his novels in his own timeline.I am now reading his stories on a historical timeline, which to me, means a lot more sense. No matter what, Smith writes a great story!Keep it up Wilbur!On to the next.....
What a journey! I think some authors would have written 4 or 5 books out of this one. You travel a lot with the characters, a lot of things happen.The previous thick adventure book I read was Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. If it is possible to compare them, I would say Moonsoon is more adventurous, and also more direct in the narration with maybe less description and the characters are more "simple", less complex with a bit more exaggerated traits.By reading this epic, I traveled a lot, I sailed

Action packed, continous flow. Hal Courtney and his close family are at it again. Real life drama with a twist. Just as I thought, this is the best Wilbur Smith novel by far. He knows how to keep you in suspense while the plot unfolds. I would have love to live my life as Tom Courtney, it must have been amazing. This book keeps you in suspense till the last page. Well deserved 5 stars
