Narrative Toward Books The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence (Zodiac Legacy #1)

3.5 stars

I picked this up on a book binge at B&N (don't judge, you know you do it from time to time too). There was a display in the children's section (see the judgement thingy above, cuz again, you know you peruse there too) and I decided to give it a shot, partially because of the cover and description but mostly because of Stan Lee. Why? Because STAN LEE, that's why! #reasons

So, here's the premise: A villain wants to become a supervillain by tapping into the powers of the Chinese zodiac. And of course he chooses the dragon power because who wouldn't?! As he tries to tap into these powers, the attempt gets botched by a woman named Jasmine and they end up sharing the power of the dragon somehow while they each head up teams to oppose each other.

Meanwhile, the remaining 11 zodiac animal powers are sent out into the world to seek out inhabitants and sweet Kamala Khan, is this book trying hard to win a diversity prize by varying up the cultural backgrounds of the superpowered cast. While this is well meaning, it often plays into clichés and stereotypes.

Moving forward, while many of the associated animal powers make sense like the tiger imbuing strength (view spoiler)[ sadly, no it's not Charlie Sheen (hide spoiler)] or monkey having an acrobatic prowess, others are a stretch. The girl who gets the power of the rabbit is able to teleport (or make quantum leaps, my guess since the book weirdly omits that pun) and the woman who gets the snake power is able to mesmerize people like in The Jungle Book. But what was completely crazy what that the dude who gets the pig is able to talk to computers and then make them short-circuit. Huh? How is that related to a pig in any way?? Maybe if he had some gift for gluttony but not electronics.

There are a lot of illustrations within the book, and while they are nice to look at in a comic-booky kinda way, it's irritating that they are red-washed. Another thing is that the artwork is awkwardly placed at times and details are hidden in the page creases when the drawing overlaps to a second page. And not for nothing, but there were times when the art did not match the action that was happening at all, maybe they were completed before the final draft and some scenes were rewritten but it's a little sloppy to have those inconsistencies. Also, Liam looks like a paunchy middle aged man instead of a teen and it kept throwing me off to see how he was represented.

Overall, it has potential to be a start to a good series.

I like the idea of this book. The idea of using the Chinese Zodiac to make 12 new super heroes or villains as the case may be. I also like it that they consider the Dragon as the strongest because I was born in the year of the Dragon.

Too much action, not enough character development. It reads like a really long, underdeveloped origin story. Plus, it seems odd that each character from different countries magically speaks English--with no discussion of how that could even be possible. This felt to me like something that could have been a fun story but was not thought through nearly enough...and yet still managed to clock in at 500 pages.

The Brothers Karamazov. Gravity's Rainbow. The Stones of Summer. Look Homeward, Angel. Dusty, yellow-paged each of these bulky tomes are staring at me waiting for me to pick them back up and finish them. But instead I opt to sneak into my kids room to borrow a beefy Stan Lee book they purchased at their schools book fair but then werent interested to actually read. (I hope my old English Lit professors can understand my first love was comic books and Stan Lee/Marvel was the best of the bunch.)

Im not sure if I should rate this book 2 or 3 stars. On the one hand, I dont hate this book. There was nothing in it that I especially disliked. But on the other hand, it just felt so bland to me. I felt like action sequences were thrown in just to make it interesting. The characters were fairly interesting, but I wished that there would have been more character development. Especially with Carlos - he was my favorite character, hands down. (And also - hes basically Cisco, and nothing you say will

Overall, The Zodiac Legacy surpassed my expectations thoroughly. The book represents the 12 animals that highlight the chinese zodiacs. (1 animal represented for each month) The animals highlight your personality from you were born from a period of time. In this book it features A man named Steven who went through a museum expedition and got caught up in a restricted area. He miraculously got caught up into a mission to defeat a man named Maxwell in battle when one zodiac pool's energy pushed

Premise: a bad guy wants to be a ultra mega bad guy by using the Dragon power of the Zodiac. This guy, Maxwell, accidentally ends up sharing the power with Jasmine. He and his team, Vanguard, are struck-shocked by this and take refuge before fighting against her and her team who are building up to be something powerful when new recruits arrive. Steven Lee takes up the Tiger power, the roar, the strength, the endurance of power. As he, Jasmine and Carlos, a geeky genius, meet up all together,
